Andrea Argoli, born in Tagliacozzo in 1570 is very famous for his book about primary directions, the Tables of the primum mobile, (from which I took the picture ) 1.
The following is my translation from Latin from another of Argoli’s main works, Two books about critical days and decumbiture of diseases2 revised and revisited by Lucia Bellizia of Apotelesma- traditional astrologer and University degree in Classical languages and Literature (on the contrary the gentle author of this blog seems very allergic to Latin, she should study more, the lazy girl !!)
The first part of this text -chapter 12 of the first book, is a collection of aphorisms about Solar Return, in the following days I’m going to publish the rest about decumbiture.
While the first book of The critical days was never translated in any modern language- this is the first time to my knowledge- the second book - which contains the collection of genitures and the book about directions have been translated in Italian by Giancarlo Brogi 3 .
On the good and bad health of the year according the solar Return of the year
About the health of the body, either good or bad, in the Return we should consider the Lights, especially the Moon and the Ascendant both in the nativity and in the Return, and their rulers: and if they are in good condition we will judge health will be good as long as some inauspicious and strong direction comes from malefics to the apheta; on the contrary, if they are in a bad condition we will expect troubles for body complexion, and this is the general rule.
Arab doctrine states it is necessary taking into consideration the lord of the year of the Return, and its divisor. The lord of the year is the ruler of the sign where the profection of the Ascendant falls in that year. Truly the divisor is the lord of the terms of the place where the direction of the Ascendant in the same year. If the direction of the Ascendant arrives at 10 degrees Aries, which are Venus terms, so Venus will be the divisor; and we should take into consideration those divisor and lord of the year not less than the Lights and the Ascendant.
Being a so complex subject, firstly we should consider which profections, directions and transits touch in the year of the Return the radix places and judge if they are unpropitious or propitious according the quality of these directions, profections and transits always comparing the Return with the geniture.
In the Return, the Lights, the Ascendant of the Return & the radix, & their rulers, as the lord of the year and the divisor are with fortunes or with the rays of fortunes free from malefics or in place of benefics in the radix, or the fortunes in the place of the Lights, or of the radix Ascendant: they promise an excellent health for the body.
But if they are afflicted by malefics, or their rays, or in the place of malefics in the geniture, or malefics are in the place of the Lights, it’s evident, or of the Ascendant, they foretell illness and other misfortunes, about which we like to list some aphorisms taken into great consideration between Ancients.
The ruler of the Ascendant of the Return and of the geniture, the lord of the year and the divisor, well beheld by benefics, unless there is some remarkable damage by malefics, and without any unpropitious direction, show favourable events in life for that year and excellent health for the body.
The Ascendant of the Return in the place of the Moon in the nativity or beheld by the radix Ascendant by a sextile or trine ray, means good and full health, unless there is an unpropitious direction, which should be always enquired about.
The profection of the Ascendant to the Moon if the Moon in that Return is free from malefics, means the same.
The same the profection of the Ascendant to Jupiter, Venus and the Dragon Head. The ruler of the Ascendant well disposed, or in its dignities, neither combust or afflicted in any way by malefics promises an year of good health.
The ruler of the Ascendant well witnessed, beheld by benefics and far from malefics in the Return, gives a perfect health.
The Lord of the year and the divisor well placed, neither afflicted by Mars or Saturn or combust foretell an year of good health.
Benefic planets to the Ascendant of the Return promise favourable events in life.
Venus or Jupiter with the Moon in the Return, or beholding the Moon by a trine or sextile, or with the Moon antiscia, signify health.
The Dragon Head or Jupiter in the 5th house free the native from danger.
The Ascendant of Return in Jupiter or Venus place in the nativity give benefits to the body health.
The Moon arriving to Venus or Jupiter in the radix means the same.
The Sun to the Ascendant if free from malefics’ affliction, supports life.
Having examined if in the Return benefics are stronger than malefics, if so they promise for that year a good condition in life.
And, on the contrary, a bad health is foretold when the Moon, the Ascendant and the Lord of the Ascendant are ill-fortuned in the Return, for example cadent, peregrine, occidental, combust, afflicted by malefics or in whatever way weakened.
The Moon, ill-disposed in the radix, if in the Return is applying to the same place, especially the 1st, the 6th, 8th or 12th , signifies a bad health in that year.
Mercury and the Moon when they are not connected, afflicted by Mars or Saturn by body or ray, show the same.
The Moon of the Return in the place of radix Mars or Saturn, especially in the 1st, 6th or 10th threatens body diseases.
The Moon afflicted by malefics with the Dragon Tail means corruptions of the humours; with the Head their plenty, with Mars, Jupiter or Venus their inflammation.
The Moon, damaged by a planet in the 6th house, signifies illness to that part of the body ruled by the sign falling in that house.
Mars or Saturn to the Ascendant in the Return, grant always illness and disease relating to their nature.
Mars afflicting Venus place in the nativity grants venereal diseases, or repletion.
Mercury with Mars or the Dragon Tail signifies melancholy and illness deriving from this humour, and often diarrhea.
Mars, or Saturn, Lord of year, always signifies some body disease, or at least soul afflictions.
Dragon Tail at the Ascendant is always harmful.
The ruler of the Ascendant of the Return in the 6th , 7th or 12th house damages the body, especially if afflicted by malefics.
The Ascendant of the Return, place of Mars of Saturn in the nativity, or place of the Sun too, never grant to the body a good disposition.
The Ascendant of the Return, place of the 6th or 12th radix house threatens the same.
The profection of the Ascendant to Mars, Saturn, or the Dragon Tail, signifies a weak health.
Mars Lord of the year with Saturn, or Saturn lord of the year with Mars are always harmful for life.
The lord of the year and the Ascendant of the Return when ill-fortuned signify the same.
The profections of the Ascendant to malefics signify damage according the nature of malefics: the same the ones to the opposite and square rays, to their antiscia, to the commanding and obeying signs, even if in a weaker way than to their bodies.
The profections of the Ascendant to the 6th , 7th, 8th or 12th house are harmful for the body too.
The lord of the Ascendant of the Return combust grants evils, and the Lord of the radix Ascendant too, or afflicted in whatever other way.
The Lord of the year beholding the Ascendant of the Return by a square or an opposition is harmful in the same way.
The Lord of the Ascendant of the Return with the Dragon Tail threatens evil and sometimes poison.
A malefic in radical 7th, as Lord of the year, afflicting the Moon in the Return together with a malefic is at the Ascendant, signifies acute illness.
The Lord of the year in the 6th house of the Return or in radix grants illness in that year.
Saturn, ruler of the year, below the horizon with Mars, or Mars in Saturn’s place, if fortunes don’t assist, grants dangers.
Saturn Lord of the year, to the Sun opposition in nativity, grants evil according qualities of the house and the sign where Saturn is placed.
Eclipses and comets on the Ascendant, either in radix or in the Return, signify dangers of life; the same if in place of the Sun and the Moon, if they are life prorogators.
