Stars of Florence

As every year,  this year too I attended the meeting of Cieloeterra group because I’m strongly persuaded this event is a great opportunity to learn many new things , and as usually I was not  disappointed. Moreover by change the hotel was in front the pharmacy of Santa Maria Novella, one of the oldest of the world, opening on the cloister of the church of Santa Maria Novella. Florentine pharmacopeia is famous,  together with Rome and Venice for the wonderful remedy of theriaca, which surely was prepared for at least 3-4 centuries between the walls of this pharmacy. Now tourists can buy simpler perfumes and potions like the rose water, but the place is stunning, it is like jumping in the past.

After having persuaded some willing (and less willing, sorry) members of Cieloeterra to visit it we were read to hear Prof. Giuseppe Bezza.

The subject of his lecture was “Rethinking the classics”. It’s impossible to summarize the whole lecture,  to hear him is always an experience. Just some words, which is truly a quote from Galen :

” What in the world is the element, in the living beings is the humour, in the year is the season. The body should be related to the universe and to the elements constituting this universe, and consequently to the changes they experience in time, in a season, or better in a given moment of the year. “

After Bezza’s words about a correct (and possible) reading of ancient astrological texts, it was Simone Sebban’s turn with her study on correlation  about Moon eclipses and  earthquakes, with a practical example, the San Francisco earthquake of beginning of the last century.

Followed a Florentine lunch where we had the possibility to discuss about the centre of the world mentioned by Albumasar in the Pingree’s Thousands- your  author was gently criticized  because she has the strong opinion that Albumasar is wrong because the centre of the world should be without any doubt Rome.

The rest of the afternoon was dedicated to the new astrological software Phasis,  explained by his programmer (and founder member of CieloeTerra) Marco Fumagalli.

It has so many functions and graphical possibilities it took 3 hours and 1/2 to be just introduced. It is possible to calculate heliacal phases, temperament, almuten, eclipses, fixed stars positions in mundo and phase, great conjunctions, eclipses, and obviously the rest, radix, solar return, profections, directions, even in the wonderful graphical ways readers of Cieloeterra site are accustomed.

Surely we will talk more of it in the future.
